Police deployed heavy security as tension prevailed in the area falling under Maharashra’s Thane district.
The fight took place late night on Thursday after a dispute took place on a WhatsApp group between former mayor and RPI leader Bhagwan Bhalerao and NCP’s Ulhasnagar’s spokesperson Kamlesh Nikam.
During the arguments, Nikam made some personal comments against Bhalerao’s family following which Bhalerao’s relative Akash Sonawane, along with his associates, barged into Kalani Mahal (bungalow) and assaulted Nikam.
After this Nikam and other NCP workers also assaulted Sonawane and his associates badly.
As soon as the people of both the parties came to know about the incident, hundreds of workers gathered outside Kalani Mahal.
Seeing the tense situation, a posse of police personnel reached the spot and rushed the injured people — Akash Sonawane and his associates — to the hospital.
On the complaint lodged by Sonawane, the Ulhasnagar Police registered a case against Kamlesh Nikam, Vishal Hazare, Vijay Yadav, Satish Gaikwad, Sampat More and three other people under the IPC sections 326, 323, 504, 506, and on rioting charges.
On Nikam’s complaint, the police registered a case against Akash Sonawane, Yogesh Pawar and four-five others under sections of assault, trespassing and rioting.
In the same case, Bhagwan Bhalerao has demanded police to book Nikam and others under attempt to murder charges since Sonawane has suffered serious injuries.
The police are to arrest anybody in the case.
Sources said Nikam and Bhalerao are preparing to contest the upcoming election of the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation from the same panel.
Police have seized the footage of the CCTV cameras.
The police found that Kalani had no role in the assault since he was inside his room while the incident took place inside the compound area of the bungalow.
