NAVI MUMBAI: The Republic Day was celebrated with cheer and gusto at the New Panvel-based Social and Evangelical Association for Love (SEAL) Ashram, wherein many rescued homeless people and children participated in the flag hoisting ceremony.
Former vice-chairperson of Maharashtra Minorities Commission, Dr Abraham Mathai, and his wife Susan Mathai, were also present at the shelter home during the event.
“The SEAL Ashram celebrated the Republic Day with orphans and rescued people. Since 1999, the SEAL Ashram has been rescuing destitutes and missing children from railway platforms and streets of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. In view of the Republic Day, we are thankful to the god and our friends who are standing with us for the work for the street people and missing children and we are proud we could give freedom to these children and people from deprivation; and have lived up to the core ideals and values of our Constitution,” said the SEAL founder, Pastor K M Philip.
Dr Mathai, who is the chief patron of SEAL, commented: “This New Panvel shelter home is doing remarkable work in not only rescuing homeless people (who mostly have mental ailments) but also trying to reunite them with their families who are obviously worried while searching for their missing loved ones. Hence, it was an honour to celebrate the Republic Day with them, since our Constitution also aims for a free and fair India where there is no discrimination.”
Mathai added that SEAL had earlier launched a hi-tech programme ‘Rescunite’ (rescue and reunite) in order to help reunite the rescued destitutes with their families, by taking the assistance of government agencies.
