Maharashtra on Wednesday reported this year’s highest-ever spike in COVID-19 cases amid rising concerns. The state reported as many as 23,179 new cases of coronavirus in a single day. There are 1,52,760 active cases in the state at present. Mumbai city reported 2,377 new cases, taking the COVID-19 tally to 3,49,974, while eight deaths took the fatality count to 11,551. Meanwhile, in another development, IPS officer Hemant Nagrale took charge as Mumbai police chief after his predecessor Param Bir Singh was transferred to the state Home Guard as announced by the state government in the afternoon. Singh was under flak over the handling of the bomb scare outside industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s residence and Mansukh Hiren case.
