THANE: The Naupada police arrested a man from Dharavi in Mumbai whose accomplice worked with a jeweller and fled away with jewellery worth Rs 762 grams gold worth Rs 32 lakh under pretext of polishing it.
The police said that the accused Rafiqul Shaikh, 48, is arrested but the main accused Raja Shaikh is still absconding.
The police said that it was on 25 February, 2021, the main accused Raja Shaikh gained the confidence of the residents in the area as he had polished the jewellery of some of the residents.
Accordingly, complainant Amod Chachad too gave him nearly Rs 32 lakh jewellery weighing 762 grms of gold for polishing. But instead of polishing the ornaments, the accused fled away with the jewellery and was nowhere to be traced.
Subsequently, a case was registered with the Naupada police and accordingly the police got into act. Based on technical analysis the police found that the arrested accused and traced him to Dharavi. “He initially was hesitant and said he does not know the prime accused but after intense probe he said that the prime accused has given him some jewellery which was recovered from his possession,” said a police officer.
The officer added that they have recovered gold worth Rs 27 lakh which weighed nearly 644 grams. The police said that they have launched the manhunt to nab the other accused involved in the crime.
The police have warned not to entertain such people as they may fall prey to such cheats.
