Police said the lift repairman, Vivek Pandey, had failed to warn residents that the lift was under repair. He has been arrested.

MUMBAI: Atharva Sharma, an 11-year-old school-going boy, was killed after getting trapped in an elevator that was being repaired at a Malad housing society on Monday evening, reports Nitasha Natu. The youngster tried to enter the lift when it started to move upwards.
Police said the lift repairman, Vivek Pandey, had failed to warn residents that the lift was under repair. He has been arrested.
The incident occurred in the seven-storeyed SRA building, Kaveri, on Chincholi Road.
Boy was trapped as lift began to move up
Atharva Sharma, the victim, was a schoolgoer and lived on the third floor with his parents. On Monday, he had gone to his grandmother’s residence at Goregaon. In the evening, he started for home with his elder brother, Kaushik, 21. “Pandey was carrying out repairs on the lift on the top floor. He hadn’t put up any sign on the ground floor or stationed any associates to caution people against opening the elevator doors,” said a policeman.
Atharva opened the collapsible door of the lift, not knowing that it was under repair, and stepped in around 5.35pm. “The lift suddenly started to move, dragging the boy upwards. His brother arrived within moments and tried to pull the boy out but the force of the lift was stronger and he kept getting dragged upwards. The lift stopped only when the child’s body got jammed,” said an officer.
The watchman heard the commotion and rushed to check. He then went upstairs to inform Pandey to halt repairs. Atharva was extricated and rushed to a hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. His mother, who was alone at home at the time, was informed about the mishap. She was inconsolable. A case was registered under IPC section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
