Acting on a tip-off, police laid a trap near the state transport bus depot in Virar (east). The couple Sonjit Mandal (40) and Manju (37), residing in Narangi village arrived at the spot with the baby girl. Police nabbed them and rescued the baby.
During the questioning, the couple confessed that the baby was handed over to them by a doctor identified as Jiten Bala, a resident of Nilemore in Nalasopara.
A 50-year-old woman Anita Bhave from Nalasopara had helped the doctor get the baby who was to be sold for Rs 5 lakh.
Police said that it is being investigated if the baby was being sold to an agent or was to be directly handed over to a childless couple.
The accused have been booked under IPC section 370 (1) (whoever knowingly or having reason to believe that a minor for engaging in sexual exploitation) and Juvenile Justice(Care and Protection of Children) Bill. They have been remanded to police custody till February 16 by the Vasai court.
Police said that details of the baby, including her parents’ are being ascertained. It is being investigated if the baby was abducted or sold by her parents.
The baby has been sent to a child care centre.
