Land for Navi Mumbai airport cleared, says CIDCO | Mumbai News

Land for Navi Mumbai airport cleared, says CIDCO | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: The much-delayed Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL) project crossed a significant milestone said CIDCO on Friday adding that it had cleared all the 3070 structures located in the project area and the entire site of 1,160 hectares has now been made available for airport construction.
“The rehabilitation of more than 5,000 families from these villages is near to completion. 10 villages in Panvel taluka of Raigad district has been acquired. The land could be cleared due to the cooperation of the project-affected people (PAP),” said Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, vice chairman and managing director, CIDCO.
“Public buildings, churches as well as public and privately owned a total of 56 temples have been relocated to the rehabilitation area and the idols have been honorably shifted with the support of the PAPs. A total of 27 constructions including community temples, schools and cemeteries have been evicted,” said CIDCO adding that important pre-development works in the airport area have been completed.
The Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), a step-down subsidiary of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) owns 74% stake in NMIAL. The Navi Mumbai airport is a greenfield airport that will service passengers in the Mumbai metropolitan region. Recently, NMIAL announced financial closure of the entire debt requirement of Rs 12,770 crore with State Bank of India.
MIAL operates the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) the lone airport currently available for airline flights to/from Mumbai and neighboring areas. The CSMIA airport operates out of a single runway and has been operating at full capacity for years now. In June 2018, the single runway airport made record by handling over 1000 landings/take-offs in 24 hours. But CSMIA’s air traffic dropped in 2019 after Jet Airways — the lone airline based out of Mumbai, that is — suspended its flights in April. While traffic picked up in the second half of the year, what with Jet Airways slots distributed to other carriers, the pandemic hit traffic again.
The Navi Mumbai airport project has missed several deadlines. For instance: former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had earlier announced that the first flight will depart from the Navi Mumbai airport in December 2019.
For decades CSMIA was the busiest airport in the country till Delhi took over in 2011. Space crunch , infrastructure constraints were the hurdles that prevented airport expansion. With no provision for a parallel runway, CSMIA currently can at best handle about 1000 flights in 24 hours, making the NMIAL a much-needed project for the Mumbai city.
