Departmental committee clears promotion of three top officers; postings expected to be announced in May

The Maharashtra Police will soon see a major shake-up as three officers of the additional director general rank have been promoted to the DG rank. Their postings will be announced soon. These promotions were cleared some days ago by the departmental promotion committee.

The three officers whose promotions were cleared are Thane commissioner Vivek Phansalkar, additional DG (special operations) K Venkatesham and additional DG (Railways) Sandeep Bishnoi. As a result, three officers of the 1995 and 1996 batches of the Indian Police Service will also get promoted. This will have implications on posts in Mumbai Police and other places.

With the state in the grip of severe second wave of Covid-19, the orders are expected to be issued in May along with the routine transfers.

Three posts of DGs have been vacant as three DG- rank officers retired between November 2020 and January 2021. The then DG Subodh Jaiswal went to Centre following differences with the ruling Mahavikas Aghadi over postings.

Commissioner of intelligence Rashmi Shukla who exposed the cash-for-postings scam of MVA government had also left for Centre.

Meanwhile, the state government is yet to get approval from the Union Public Service Commission for appointment of Sanjay Pandey as director general of police.

Mumbai Mirror’s calls to the home minister, Dilip Walse Patil, for an official reaction went unanswered.

After Jaiswal’s departure to the Centre, the state government appointed Hemant Nagrale as DGP, but never sent a proposal about it to the UPSC. Soon after Nagrale was appointed as Mumbai Police commissioner, Rajnish Seth was appointed as DG, but no proposal was sent to the UPSC. Now, the state government is awaiting an approval from the UPSC for Pandey’s appointment. Sources in the government said that Pandey, a no-nonsense officer, has been brought in specially to inquire against former police commissioner Parambir Singh to put the then home minister Anil Deshmukh in a tight spot over allegations that he ordered officers to collect Rs 100 crore as bribes.
