MUMBAI: Six First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered by Mumbai Police until Tuesday evening in connection with mass celebration of Dahi Handi amid the pandemic and violation of Covid-19 restrictions.
“Five police stations — Worli, Kasturba Marg, Ghatkopar, Dadar, Kalachowky, Sakinaka — registered cases for violating the Dahi Handi ban. Cases were registered under sections 188, 269 and 270 of IPC,” said a senior officer.
The Kasturba Marg police station registered a case of violation of lockdown guidelines as people had crowded a temple for ‘Krishna janma’ late on Tuesday.
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) party workers had threatened to defy the state government’s orders and proceed with forming human pyramids. At Saki Naka on Tuesday morning, police detained nine MNS party workers including five women. The MNS delegation was led by regional chief Mahendra Bhanushali and was attempting to form a human pyramid on Ghatkopar Link Road near Hotel Peninsula, police said.
The state had stipulated that human pyramids should not be formed as human contact could lead to rapid spread of coronavirus. Instead, people should hold blood donation and health camps and observe the festival privately, authorities had urged.
