MUMBAI: Before a 21-year-old commerce graduate could end his life, the Mumbai cyber police team at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) stayed back overnight on the intervening night of February 15 and 16 and tracked him down to his Borivli home and got him counselled.
The youth has planned to end his life and posted the suicide content on his Facebook page as he was severely depressed due to the loss of his parents and the torture he has been undergoing at the hands of his step-mother. A timely alert sent by a Dadar resident helped the police to save the youth’s live within four hours of the search operation.
On Wednesday, the cyber police after counselling the youth decided to get him treated at Nair hospital under the supervision of a psychiatrist. “The boy was under severe depression and needed support to keep him in a positive frame of mind. He lost his father six months ago and his mother a few years ago. Later his father married again and the step-mom has been harassing him since then. He broke down completely when he lost his father during the pandemic. He is the only child. He is sent for psychiatrist treatment,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber-Mumbai), Rashmi Karandikar told TOI.
The youth had lost hope of living and it came to such an extreme that he posted his suicide note on FB late on February 15. This was noticed by a Dadar resident who rushed to the Shivaji Park police station late at night and got them to act swiftly. “On getting information from the police station, the technical team got the internet protocol (IP) address under tracking mode at around 1 am and managed to locate the youth at around 4 am. This was the ninth such instance in the last six months when the cyber police have acted swiftly after they got late-night calls about people showing suicide tendency that they post on social media,” said Karandikar.
On Sunday, the Cyber police managed to track and foil suicidal tendency developed in a 17-year-old class 12 student at Amravati after he tweeted at around 8.02pm on Sunday as he was worried about not having clarity on the board exam.
